Why does my 2003 Dodge neon grind during acceleration?

I have a grinding noise coming from the transmission/differential area. Checked wheel bearings, no play, replaced both CV axles, still hear the grinding noise. Is there a gear or a bearing inside that goes out often? Need help! I think I can fix the problem without going to a shop, but don't have access to a repair manual.
