In Japan, the Samurai blessed the blade before using it?

I have seen this done where they have the index and middle fingers trace along the flat of the blade before they use it...mind you, my Japanese experience has been totally by osmosis, so I can't confirm it in actual sword use. I've always assumed that they were blessing the blade. Anyone know why? Or is my assumption erroneous?
